Sony ECM-W5 2-Person Wireless Microphone System

Designed primarily for Sony cameras equipped with a digital audio interface compatible multi-interface shoe (MI Shoe), the Sony ECM-W5 is a two-person wireless microphone system, ideal for interviews, video production, live streaming and content creation. The receiver connects directly to the camera's MI shoe, allowing for cable-free digital audio recording and power directly from the camera itself. On compatible models, you can record 32-bit float audio directly within the video file, simplifying editing and file management. The system includes two microphones/transmitters, a receiver, a charging case and a USB-C adapter; It also offers built-in backup recording, wireless headphone monitoring, and timecode synchronization. Thanks to its versatility, the system can also be used with computers and mobile devices, as well as cameras without a Sony MI shoe.

Digital audio integration with Sony cameras

Through the MI shoe of a compatible Sony camera, the ECM-W5 transmits digital audio at resolutions up to 96 kHz/24-bit or 48 kHz/32-bit float. On cameras that support this feature, 32-bit float audio is recorded directly as an audio track within the video file, eliminating the need to manage and synchronize a separate audio recording. Low volume voices and sudden peaks can be corrected in post-production, reducing the need for constant gain adjustments during filming.

Input gain can be adjusted automatically to prevent clipping and distortion, or manually within a range of -12 to +12 dB, even when recording at 32-bit float. The noise reduction (noise-cut) and low-frequency cut (low-cut) functions can be activated or deactivated via the menu.

Reliable wireless audio and flexible monitoring

The ECM-W5 offers low latency wireless transmission with a range of up to approximately 500 meters (1640 feet) in direct line of sight conditions. Its optimized wireless design uses Bluetooth frequency hopping technology to maintain a stable connection and minimize dropouts, even in high-radio environments. You can connect compatible Sony headphones with Bluetooth LE Audio technology to the receiver for cable-free monitoring. Additionally, the receiver can capture audio from the built-in microphones in compatible Sony wireless headphones, an ideal solution for lightweight vlogging setups. Using a compatible microphone, you can make binaural recordings, capturing ambient sounds with spatial depth perception. Internal backup and four-channel expansion

Each microphone/transmitter comes with 64GB of built-in memory for independent recording and local backup. Compatible Sony cameras also support simultaneous WAV recording, allowing you to retain a 32-bit float audio source separately from the video file. Internal recordings can be exported to PC via USB-C, directly from the microphone or via the charging case.

You can add up to two ECM-W5T transmitters (available separately) to simultaneously record four people on separate tracks using a compatible camera. Recording start/stop control directly on the microphone ensures convenient use during interviews and other productions.

Lavalier microphone inputs and versatile mounting options

Both the transmitter and receiver have a 3.5mm mono input for external microphones, such as the optional Sony ECM-L1 model. The locking TRS connector on the transmitter prevents accidental disconnection of the cable.

Clip or magnet attachment options allow for flexible positioning on clothing or surfaces. The discreet appearance is ideal for use on camera, while the vertical design makes it easy to hold for handheld reporting and live streaming. In addition to use with Sony cameras, both the microphone and receiver can connect to compatible smartphones and PCs. The included USB-C adapter allows you to connect the receiver wirelessly to devices that support the USB Audio Class 2.0 standard, including 32-bit float recording.

Timecode, controls and power on synchronized with the camera

Timecode output makes it easy to align shots in post-production. In USB SYNC mode, a USB-C cable connects the receiver to a compatible Sony camera to synchronize with timecode stored in the metadata v...video, supporting multi-camera workflows.

Opening the charging case puts the receiver into standby mode, while removing the units powers them on and makes them ready for use. The receiver features a high-contrast AMOLED touchscreen and a control dial (which also functions as a button) for adjusting settings. If configured beforehand, synchronized power-on via the Multi Interface (MI) Shoe automatically turns on both the receiver and the microphones.

A compatible camera can power the shoe-mounted receiver during extended shoots. The microphones and receiver offer up to seven hours of continuous use on a full charge. With the receiver powered by the camera and the microphones charged via the case, the total operating time reaches up to 11 hours. LED indicators display the status of power, recording, and connection. More than 41% of the plastic used in the main unit is derived from recycled materials.
